It is 52 BC. Four hundred years after the founding of the Republic, Rome is the richest city in the world, a cosmopolitan metropolis of a million people and the epicenter of a vast empire. The republic was founded on the principles of joint government and fierce personal competition, not allowing one man to assume absolute control.

Gaius Julius Caesar (Ciarn Hinds, Munich) ends a one-year campaign to conquer Gaul. In the process of conquest, he grew rich and perfected a deadly army led by the Thirteenth Legion, a group of men ready to obey his every command. Two members of the Third, Lucious Vorenus (Kevin McKidd, Kingdom of Heaven) and Titus Pullo (Ray Stevenson, King Arthur), are the central characters of the show.

Vorenus is an obedient soldier and a family man. He is respected by the people and by Caesar himself. Pullo is a female recruit who drinks. His fierce fighting skills and rebellious streak also make him popular. The uneasy relationship between Warren and Poole begins when circumstances force them to cooperate on a mission of great importance to Caesar.

Back in Rome, Casesar’s niece, Atia (Polly Walker, Sliver), is an extremely ambitious and cunning player for the Roman nobility. Along with Caesar’s mistress, Servilla, we have two women who rival every man in the empire in cunning and cruelty. Attia’s son (and future emperor of Rome), Octavian (Max Pirkis, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World) is a preternaturally shrewd teenager with a keen understanding of Roman politics.

Caesar’s main rivals are Brutus (Tobias Menzies, The Lowdown) and Pompey Magnus (Kenneth Cranham, Layer Cake). Pompey is co-consul in Rome with Caesar. The struggle between Caesar and Pompey is, at first, about will and reason. Finally comes the swords. Brutus’ relationship with Caesar is much more complex. Caesar needs Brutus and his influential family to legitimize his rule, but Brutus is a republican who abhors Caesar’s imperial ambitions. Their father-son relationship is the source of great innerconflict for both.

Caesar’s rise to power and its consequences for Rome are the backdrop against which all character conflicts arise. Politics, personal rivalries, friendships and a few very Oedipal relationships are skilfully combined with historical facts to tell a unique story of Rome during one of its most turbulent times. Don’t worry, I’m just scratching the surface here. There are many characters and plots in this sprawling story that I leave to the viewer to discover.
